1 Person Tent . . . check . . . flash light . . . check . . . sky full of stars . . . check . . .
That was all I took with me the night that my husband left. After years of threatening to leave he finally did it. I guess I thought the day would never come.
I’ll never forget when my best friend called me up on the line only to hear the sound of my voice cracking and me weeping miserably from the living room door. I guess a part of me thought he would come back.
After a few hours on the telephone I’ll never forget what my friend said to me “He’s not coming back, Shannon. And you can’t spend the night hoping. You have known this was coming for a while. You can lie down and die, Shannon, or you can get out and live.”
“But you don’t understand, Norah. I cannot sleep in this bed alone.” “Fine.” My friend replied, “Don’t.” This was easy for her to say I thought. She had a wonderful husband and three beautiful children to show for all their years of marriage. I had nothing – Just an empty house, an empty bed and an even emptier heart.
As I was busy despising my friend for not understanding she interrupted my thought process by saying, “Get out the 1 person tent that we had back in college and sleep out in the backyard. Go camping!” With that Norah had to go. She said she had something pressing to take care of. Great, I thought, even she had abandoned me.
With no other option and not feeling much like lying in our big bed I went down to the basement and pulled out the 1 person tent. I admit that was pretty depressing in and of itself. One person, I thought . . . now I was only one person.
I remember setting up “camp” in the backyard. The silence of the backyard made me cry. Everything was so quiet . . . and this was the way it was going to be from now on – quiet. After an hour I remember laying their thinking “Great idea, Norah. Now not only am I crying and alone . . . I’m freezing and I think there is a bear in the rose bush!” I never had done well in the dark after all. So I zipped up my little tent because I was feeling just a little freaked out.
What was that noise? There it was again and it was getting closer. “I’m going to kill Norah!” I whispered to myself. That girl was going to get me eaten out here. Then I heard the zipper of my tent slowly pulling down . . .It was Norah.
I told you I had something pressing to do.” She said. “I had to drive over here to get you through the night.” With that there we were – two people in a one person tent . . . We sat up and talked ‘til dawn we even talked about of all things 3 person tents for another time though when we might go camping for an all girls weekend. By morning I felt like I could take on the world, even if it would be tough. That Norah maybe she knew what she was talking about after all and who knows maybe someday I could brave the best 1 person tent I ever owned or I could update it to a khyam hiking tent and do that bushwalking trip I had always wanted to do the world is my oyster.
